Organics vs GMOs – the importance of understanding!
More and more countries are officially saying “No!” to GMOs! After the experts analyzed the positive feedback on GMOs, it turned out that almost every "scientific" study with the conclusion "GMOs are harmless!" was financed by the manufacturers of such products. Therefore, it is difficult to consider them objective. Scientists stress that even despite the lack of long-term studies on toxicology of animals and humans, what is already known raises serious concerns about the health of people, animals, plants and the environment. Now many countries use GM foods. Among them are the USA, Canada, China, Australia, Argentina, Mexico, Uruguay. In Switzerland, a referendum was held, and this country officially said "no" to transgenic products. The US is the largest producer of GM foods because 80% of the US food products were made using genetically modified ingredients (GMI). Many European countries refused to use GMOs. Germany and France imposed a ban on GMOs. In Germany, even scientific development of genetically modified foods is banned. The UK has secured a ban on the cultivation of GMO products in Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland, as well as in England. Belgium has a ban on GMOs in Wallonia, but not in Flanders.
Roundup is the most widespread herbicide in the world produced by the agricultural concern Monsanto. Glyphosate is the main Roundup ingredient. In July 2017, California placed glyphosate on its list of known carcinogens. Moreover, recently, the court in San Francisco ordered the Monsanto agro-concern to pay school groundskeeper Dewayne Johnson € 254 million compensation for suffering because herbicides Roundup and RangerPro containing glyphosate may have caused cancer in him.
The current verdict is only the tip of the iceberg, similar cases have been filed by hundreds of other patients. In the United States, thousands of people with cancer accuse Monsanto of their illness. A federal judge in San Francisco reviewed more than 400 such lawsuits only last month. So, the jury's decision presented the possibility of filing similar claims against Monsanto, and furthermore, set off a chain reaction all over the world. The German Bayer, which recently bought Monsanto, advocated the safety of glyphosate and informed that it would appeal the jury’s choice. Glyphosate, the most utilized herbicide in the European Union, has been the subject of dialogues for a long time. A year ago, the European Commission broadened its permit, yet after the San Francisco court decision, demands for its ban strengthened. Minister of the Environment of France Nicolas Hulot called the verdict "the beginning of the war" against glyphosate in Europe. Activists of India did not remain on the sidelines either and required the national prohibition on glyphosate. The head of Greenpeace in Australia Jamie Hanson encouraged the Australian government to strictly limited the sales of Roundup all over the country as well! It’s hardly surprising that, taking into account all of the above, products called "organic food" are gaining more and more popularity. Most importantly, organic products are grown in clean, ecological places. Instead of chemical fertilizers and nitrates, only natural, such as manure, compost, and ash are used. Cows, pigs, and poultry are not injected with antibiotics, nor the growth enhancers are used Organic products are nearly 50% richer with useful vitamins and antioxidants. Dairy products, as well as organic meat, contain less saturated fat and many useful fatty acids and are also richer in a protein. Since WHO and health authorities in different countries are underestimating the existing danger of GMOs, ordinary people, non-governmental organizations and independent scientists have to deal with the dominance of transgenes without the support of these influential structures. We have been enjoying gifts from nature since ancient times, that is why it’s vital to remember that we must take care of our woods, rivers, and air, thinking about the planet our children will live on. I have been against GMO's since I first learned about them and everything I have learned since only increases my opposition. I completely agree with you here.
