Secret Life of Musical Plants

The belief that plants are a conscious living species with a high collective intelligence is gaining momentum and it is now thought that plants do have the ability to communicate using electricity but, have you ever thought that if you could listen to plants, what you would hear?

Joe Patitucci of PlantWave has been tuning into the secret life of plants for many years. Through his childhood love of nature and later electronic music and computer tech, inspiration took hold, through a series of synchronistic events, to create music from plant data.

PlantWave taps into a plants natural biorhythm and converts them into music. By placing electronic sensors onto two different leaves, these electrodes detect electrical variations between two points, especially when the plant is moving water around its system during photosynthesis. Every plant has a different pattern and even different leaves on the same plant can produce different patterns.

The fluctuation in the biorhythm is transferred into data and graphed as a wave, waves are then translated into a pitch and the pitch is routed, via software, through an instrument or instruments of choice to produce music. Every note is an expression of what is happening in the plant in that moment, the notes are unpredictable, stochastic and reflective of the moment. If a plant is struggling for water then its natural biorhythms may go undetected, however there are also times when your plant may be just chilling in silence.
