People have always been interested in various secrets and mysteries. It is all about human nature – longing for all that is hidden and new, trying to find correct answers and gaining knowledge.
It is hard to believe, but there are natural phenomena that scientists still cannot explain. Balls of electricity appearing in the sky, or the random movement of rocks without the help of a person or animal – the world of Nature is full of magic for us to explore.
Blood rains in Kerala
In India, on the territory of Kerala state red rains were noticed several times. Initially, it was assumed that atmosphere precipitations could be colored by meteor dust. When scientists managed to collect water samples, they discovered red algae spores from local water bodies. Nevertheless, how they dispersed and accumulated in the clouds remained a mystery.
Each year in October, fireballs of 1 m in diameter appear in the northern part of Thailand above the surface of the Mekong River. They fly into the air and dissolve after a certain time. People, who have observed this phenomenon, argue that the number of such balls can reach up to 800 and during the flight, they change their color. People explain this mysterious phenomenon of nature in different ways. Local Buddhists claim that Naga (the gigantic seven-headed snake) releases fireballs in honor of its devotion to Buddha. Scientists believe that this is not a mysterious natural phenomenon, but the usual emissions of methane and nitrogen, which are formed in the mud. The gas at the bottom of the river explodes forming bubbles, which rise up, turning into fire. However, why this happens only once a year, scientists cannot explain.
In Holland near the city of Trondheim, in the sky of the valley you can observe an inexplicable phenomenon - the luminous rays that occur in different places. In winter, flashes are brighter and appear more often. Scientists attribute this to the fact that the air is rarefied. It was discovered that the form of luminous formations can be different and their speed of movement varies.
Scientists have conducted a huge amount of research, and strangely, the lights behaved miscellaneously, because sometimes, the spectral analysis did not give any results, and there were cases when radars recorded a double echo. To determine what kind of nature and origin they have, a special station, which constantly performs measurements, was created. In one of the scientific journals, it was hypothesized that the valley is a natural accumulator. The conclusion was made because of the information, that large stocks of chemical substances are concentrated on this territory.
Monarch butterfly migration
Each year, millions of North American Danaid Monarch butterflies migrate more than 3,000 km to the South for the winter. For many years, no one knew what their destination was.
In the 1950s, zoologists began tagging and tracking butterflies and found out that they are migrating to the mountain forest of Mexico. However, even knowing that monarchs choose 12 of the 15 mountain sites in Mexico, scientists still cannot understand how they orient.
According to some studies, they use the position of the Sun to fly to the South. However, the sun gives only a general direction. According to one of the theories, geomagnetic forces attract them, but this has not been confirmed. Only recently, scientists began to study the features of the navigation system of these butterflies.
Found in the arid meadows of western South Africa, witch’s rings are circular tracts of barren land. They usually possess monospecific herbaceous vegetation and vary in diameter from 2 to 15 m. The origin and history of these mystical circles has long been a puzzle, and even nowadays, scientists do not know their exact origin. One favorite suggestion is that termites are responsible for the circles, but the area of the phenomenon is much wider than the termites’ natural habitat.
The world around us now and then challenges humanity with amazing enigmas. Will we ever know the answers to all these mysterious nature’s questions? Everything is possible! However today, these natural phenomena remain a mystery.
“The diversity of the phenomena of nature is so great, and the treasures hidden in the heavens so rich, precisely in order that the human mind shall never be lacking in fresh nourishment.” Johannes Kepler
